Ann Leamon, Partner, Co-founder

Ann Leamon is the Chief Operating Officer of Bella Private Markets, which she co-founded in 2010. She manages the firm’s projects, working closely with clients and organizing the team’s resources to meet their specific needs. In addition to overseeing the firm’s daily operations, Ann has also directly authored many of Bella’s reports, and develops and teaches custom programs for Bella’s clients.

Ann offers a wealth of experience in the areas of private capital and innovation from both an academic and practitioner perspective. In 2000, Ann joined Dr. Josh Lerner and Dr. Felda Hardymon in restructuring Harvard Business School’s Venture Capital and Private Equity (VCPE) class, the school’s most over-subscribed second year offering. For a dozen years, she wrote all the cases for that class, capturing the experiences and insights of top global investors and entrepreneurs. She also designed and helped implement the interactive VCPE game, a multi-player online simulation of a private equity market.

Between 2001 and 2010, Ann managed corporate communications and investor relations for Bessemer Venture Partners, a global top-tier venture capital and growth equity firm. In this capacity she worked closely with the general partners and the accounting team, creating reports that described both the portfolio companies’ development and their financial performance. In addition, she attended weekly investment committee meetings to ensure that the investment theses and the firm’s strategy were properly conveyed to limited partners.

With Drs. Lerner and Hardymon, Ann has co-authored three editions of The Venture Capital and Private Equity Casebook (J. Wiley, 2005, 2009, 2012) as well as Venture Capital, Private Equity, and the Financing of Entrepreneurship, (J. Wiley, 2012), an introductory textbook for venture capital and private equity. During her 14 years at HBS, Ann wrote over 120 cases and other pieces of teaching material. Before joining the VCPE group, she co-founded the Center for Case Development, where she taught all the case writers at HBS their craft.

Prior to joining HBS, Ann spent nine years in industry. She was a senior business analyst and strategic planner for L.L. Bean and started her career at Central Maine Power as an economic and load forecaster. In that position, she led an industry-award-winning project on the use of conservation to offset the construction of transmission lines.

Ann holds a B.A. with Honors in German from the University of Kings College/Dalhousie in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she received the Governor General’s medal. She also earned an MA in Economics from the University of Montana and an MFA in writing from the Bennington Writing Seminars. She serves on the board of the Deboche Nunnery Reconstruction Project, which is rebuilding the oldest Buddhist nunnery in Nepal.
